What could be more natural for mothers than giving life to children through natural childbirth? Since we have walked the earth, women have given birth naturally without invasive techniques, debilitating drugs, and control over what makes us feel safe and comfortable. Countless studies have been written about how vaginal births provide a variety of advantages to mother, partner and child. One of the most important benefits being studied is how babies born naturally display stronger immune systems than those born through surgery or caesarean section. In the womb a newborn’s gut is sterile. As the baby travels through the birth canal it absorbs millions of microbes or protective bacteria from the mother. This is critical for a healthy life to come. These microbes rapidly begin to colonize in the baby’s gut called gut flora.
Gut flora or more specifically gut microbiota live in our digestive tracts and do a host of useful functions. It prevents the production of harmful bacteria, creates antibodies, produces vitamins (e.g. vitamin K), produces hormones, and more! Studies are showing that newborns delivered naturally have reduced episodes of colic and eczema. Developing a strong immune system in infants goes a long way to minimize disease, infections such as ear, allergies, rheumatic disorders, and beyond. Essentially what I am underscoring is that all the research being conducted on infant gut colonization by microbes through vaginal birth points to a positive impact on our children’s long term health. A balanced immune system, created day one via a mother’s vaginal fluids, is essential to a healthy life. What a terrific way to inoculate your child through what Mother Natural provides. Three cheers for natural birth!
